ODE TO GECKO

by Georgia Fraser

Oh gecko, my gecko,

Luscious eyelashes, that rest upon your non-existent eyelids

Your large spherical eyes, as they stare into my very being

Inspire me to create, inspire me to be

Smooth scales, soft and cool

Resting on my cheek, after taking a leap of faith onto my face

THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING

by Nashaly Espinal

Oh, God,

Although I’m going through a tough time right now,

I want to thank you.

I know that all the good things in my life come from you.

My family, my friends, my home, the delicious food I get to enjoy daily,

It’s all thanks to you.

You’ve made my life better since you came into it, filling it with joy and prosperity

You’ve helped me through my darkest times

So thank you for that

Please help me keep being persistent and not grow weary of waiting,

Amen.

ODE TO SLEEP

by Honey Spohr

When my eyes flutter shut

And you take away my thoughts,

You give me a dream to play a part in.

A fantasy reality.

O, the wonder you bring,

You give me new things to fathom,

A new reality to encapsulate myself in.

The familiar faces being shown

Greeting me once again,

Saying a kind “hello” and “good morning”

As though it was reality and

It truly was the morning.

O, the happiness it brings for me

To feel the new life my brain has brought me.

I appreciate the kind dreams you grant me

And the sweet sweet distance from my reality.

ODE TO MUSIC

by Emily Gonzalez

O music, I adore you.

Helping me get through the tough days.

Belting to you in the car with my friends.

Being there to entertain me.

You help me get through the boring moments of life.

You make everyone dance.

And you help me smile.

You remind me of memories and help me create new ones.

You add sparkle to my life.

What would my life be without you?

And I thank my lucky stars that you were created.

DRAGONS

by McKenna Swan

I’m calling upon a dragon on a night such as this; a night filled with silence, ready to be filled with your magnificence, o’ winged beast. Dragons, they are the teachers from my childhood, whispering their wisdom into my underdeveloped ears when my father’s back was turned, instructing me to become my best self from the moment I chose to love them. I saw past their flawed portrayals in archaic fairy tales, and in turn, saw all the lessons they had the capacity to teach. Ancient spirits from both the East and West are circling about, itching to show their skills in a display of scales. From the Occidentals: an emblem of courage, ferocity, and a persistent reminder to set your soul ablaze. From the Orientals: a deep sense of indestructible serenity, benevolence, and the sensation of chilled waters washing over my weary body. They can be your guides, too, but only to those who choose to hear their misleading tongues.

SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR, YOU SEE

Oh, universe, oh universe!

I pen my gratitude in verse

I must say appreciatively

I have so much to be thankful for, you see,

For the brains in my head and the feet in my shoes

My being thankful is not new news

I am thankful for my parents who love me so

And the roof over my head when it does snow

THE PUPPY IN THE WINDOW

by Morgan Rosa

My Finn’s eyes glisten in the sun,

he barks at random strangers for fun.

His beautiful strawberry blonde coat travels with me wherever I go,

oh how I love him so.

Watching you in the window as I pull in the driveway,

I produce a smile that never fades away.

Taking you on long walks around the neighborhood,

Catching you chewing on things and always up to no good.

You are the light in my life.

PUPPY DOG TALE

by Amiah Rivera

Oh, Mylo, how much I love you,

You just would not believe.

There’s so much I could say to you,

But you wouldn’t even listen to me.

Seeing you every morning makes my day start off great.

With your large amount of energy,

What is there to hate?

I am so glad to have a dog like you,

As you bring so much joy into my life.

There is no other you compare to,

With your light that shines so bright.

PILLOW

by Semantha Ngo

Thank you, for you, who are soft as a sheep;

For when I must rest my head,

It is you who steers me into sleep

As soon as I climb upon my bed;

Thank you, for you, who brings me comfort as I dream

Until the morning sun shines its beams.
